Captured on Anglesey, North Wales, July 2026. Some wildlife encounters remain with you long after the camera has been packed away. Nutkin of the Dingle recalls my very first close encounter with Britain’s much-loved Red Squirrel, deep within an ancient Anglesey woodland just as dawn began to lift the darkness from the forest floor.
The summer of 2026 brought exceptional warmth, yet the squirrels appeared remarkably healthy, their burnished russet coats glowing amongst the fresh greens of the woodland. High above, they bounded effortlessly through the canopy, racing along impossibly slender branches with an exuberance that was impossible not to admire. Their movements carried the carefree spirit of children at play, energetic, fearless and endlessly entertaining.
Unlike the hurried glimpses I had imagined, these woodland residents displayed an unexpected confidence. Each seemed to possess its own distinct personality, often pausing to study their visitor with bright, inquisitive eyes before continuing their morning adventures. This young squirrel settled for just a few moments, delicately holding its breakfast while quietly surveying the woodland around it. That brief pause revealed every fine detail: the velvet texture of its coat, delicate whiskers catching the morning light and the unmistakable sparkle of an alert, curious eye.
Nutkin of the Dingle is a celebration of a species that embodies the spirit of our native woodlands, playful, charismatic and full of life. More than a portrait, it captures the wonder of a first meeting with one of Britain’s most enchanting wild animals, a moment that transformed admiration into lasting affection.
