Captured in Lampeter, April 2026. Named after the term once used for coal in the mining communities of Wales, Black Gold celebrates the understated beauty of one of our smallest and most energetic garden birds, the Coal Tit.
Captured on a day when the weather seemed determined to showcase every season in the space of a few hours, this photograph was the reward for patience. Sunshine gave way to rain, sleet and finally snow, which settled softly on the bright yellow broom behind the weathered log. Just thirty minutes earlier, the same backdrop had been glowing in warm sunlight.
Coal Tits rarely remain still for more than a heartbeat, making moments like this wonderfully fleeting. Their striking black, white and soft grey plumage is echoed in the muted tones of the snowy background, creating a quiet harmony that feels both timeless and atmospheric.
Black Gold is a reminder that nature often reveals its finest moments to those willing to wait, proving that patience is always richly rewarded.
