Tiny River Jewel – Limited Edition Fine Art Print, edition of 25
Captured along the River Tern in June 2026, Tiny River Jewel marks my very first encounter with a juvenile kingfisher, a moment that remains one of the most unforgettable of my time behind the camera. Racing low above the water with astonishing speed, this tiny bird paused upon a moss-covered perch, offering a fleeting glimpse into the earliest days of one of Britain’s most captivating river dwellers.
Though not yet adorned with the vivid brilliance of its parents, its softer apricot breast, shortened bill and dark feet revealed its youth, while the first hints of iridescent teal shimmered across its crown and wings as the morning sun filtered through the riverside canopy. It seemed almost impossible that something so small could command such presence, sitting quietly, patiently surveying the woodland and river beyond with an instinct far older than its age.
For several precious moments, time itself appeared to slow. The gentle flow of the River Tern, the cool morning air and the dappled woodland light formed the perfect stage for this remarkable encounter. Every subtle turn of its head reflected the alert curiosity of a young bird beginning to explore its world.
Tiny River Jewel celebrates the wonder of first encounters and the fragile beauty of youth in the natural world, a reminder that some of nature’s greatest treasures are not measured by their size, but by the feeling they leave long after they have disappeared from sight.
